2020 Evening Series – Match 5

Tuesday 14th July 2020

Fishing the middle 12 pegs for the final match of the 2020 Evening Series, we welcomed 10 anglers who braved the wind to tackle what Nutford has to offer. The temperature felt a lot cooler than recent weeks, with cloud cover and the wind – the evening had a touch of Autumn about it.

Despite the wind a number of the anglers did choose to tackle their peg with pole, and the waggler is in favour elsewhere – fairly standard practice for Nutford. Minnows were found to plague those who fished shallow – those who did find fish found them anchored to the bottom – with Perch making a consistent show across all pegs.

3 anglers breaking 2lb weights with the next four anglers each putting over a pound in.

We knew the numbers were going to be tight, with 10 anglers, Alex would need to blank or go home early not to win the series – very little chance of that happening, and so the results show. Places 3-5 were competed for as expected, and the final table threw up a surprise for both Terry and Craig!

Congratulations for the night goes to Bryan Hunt for putting a 2lb 12oz bag together, with Ben Bentley in second and David Sollis (a former junior member) taking third – well done guys, great results and fantastic way to end the Series.

As for the Series itself, 1st place to Alex Compiani (72pts)! Congratulations Alex for superb angling through the 5 matches. Alex was the only angler to put over 3lb in the net and did so on 2 occasions; the weight table certainly demonstrates Alex’s ability, never mind the final points results.

2nd place in the 2020 Evening Series goes to Ben Bentley (62pts) and Craig Whelan (49pts) claiming 3rd place at the last moment.

Thank you to all anglers who made it out to Nutford Farm for the 2020 Evening Series, we had the largest numbers we’ve hosted in years and we had consistent numbers from the first to the last match – a real show of support for the club and our informal, friendly, club matches – thank you!

2020 Evening Series – Match 4

Tuesday 30th June 2020

We were delighted to welcome 12 anglers to our fourth 2020 Evening Series match, with the top end of field 1 at Nutford Farm being chosen for this evenings match.

Mixed bags all round with Dace, Perch, Minnows and Roach being caught. The fishing was harder this week and the results show this. Varied techniques being used across the pegs, from whip, pole, waggler and stick float, the top end of field 1 offers a lot of peg variety so tactics and technique are key. Maggot consistently the bait of choice with some using ground baits to attract and keep fish in their pegs.

Congratulations to Alex Compiani again for taking top spot, fourth match in a row! Liam Tuck showed great skill and missed out on the top spot by only 3 ounces! Our very own Tony Beddingfield (who hasn’t fished a match so far!) turned up and showed how experience and skill can result in a great position in the rankings.

Upon initial calculation it may seem that Alex Compiani has already walked away with the series crown, however mathematically it’s still to play for! The top spot is a fight between Alex and Ben Bentley, we’re looking forward to seeing the next match play out! And there will definitely be some jostling for 3rd, 4th and 5th spots!

2020 Evening Series – Match 3

Tuesday 30th June 2020

Another healthy turn out of anglers for the third match in our 2020 Evening Series. Choosing field 1 again for consistency and ease of access, the waters looked good with a tinge of colour due to recent rain and with overcast skies it wasn’t too bright.

A number of anglers struggled this evening, with good healthy debate over technique versus draw of the peg versus conditions. There’s something to be said about technique when those pulling the weights are regulars on the banks with keen attention to how they fish the waters. We spoke with Bryan Hunt after the match who’d fished field 2 and managed to pull in over 3lb of fish in 2 hours.

Congratulations to Alex Compiani again, winning the evening session with a bag of 3lb 2oz. Alex was kind enough to share that he’d used single maggot with a positively shot stick float running through his swim. Terry has a great night with a small haul of fish but weighing in over 1.5lb and Ben missed out on 2nd spot by an ounce which is impressive given the amount of Minnows in his net (must have been getting on 100 fish!)

2020 Evening Series – Match 2

Tuesday 23rd June 2020

A great turn out on a very warm evening, seeing more new members bankside and the return of David and Liam, having moved up in recent years from our Junior membership to Adult.

There was more colour in the water due to some rain earlier in the week, and fish were topping in all swims – the potential was there but as ever, Nutford can be a challenging place to fish at times. A few anglers took to pole and the rest of the field using waggler to work through their swim, the usual baits in action (single and double maggot) with some choosing to use ground bait to try and attract fish into their peg.

The first third of the pegs in field 1 clearly providing the results, despite there being favour among anglers for the shallower swims towards the top of field 1, the deeper swims continue to provide good fishing on a consistent basis.

We finished slightly earlier to make good use of the light whilst running around for weighing in, congratulations to Alex for his second win of the series, a super result. Also congratulations to Jamie, first time fishing a match with us and made peg 1 work like a charm – great work!. Taking third spot on the evening was our very own Craig Whelan,
well done Craig, just missing out on second spot by a couple of ounces, we bet you wished you’d landed that first Perch now?!

2020 Evening Series – Match 1

Tuesday 16th June 2020

9 anglers fished Nutford Farm (field 1), a bright but cloudy evening ahead without any forecast of rain. The water was clear in the top 12 inches or so, with plenty of Chublets, Dace and Perch to be seen in each swim.

With swims cut and some work to be done, select pegs were chosen for the draw, with feedback welcomed from each angler, post-match, on any adjustments needed.

Waggler was the choice for all, maggot and worm being the baits used. Some choosing to use a ground bait, the key to success was regular feeding to attract fish to the peg and avoid the minnows!

Terry pulled out a single Perch – and what a fish it was, a health looking example just over the 1lb mark. Chris had the largest Chub of the evening which wasn’t individually weighed but looked like it would be getting towards 1lb.

Well done to Alex for a great weight on the evening, and to Chris and Stewart demonstrating that no matter where you are in the pegging you can put a catch together.

For this season, points are awarded from 1st to 15th placing. Thus 1st 15 points, 2nd 14 points and so on. DNW or placing 16th or lower awards zero points.

Our next 2020 Evening Series match will be held on Tuesday 23rd June 2020, draw bank side in the first field at 18:00, lines in at 18:30 and out at 21:00. Please note the earlier finish time to allow for time in weighing in, if all booked in anglers are in agreement – the match may commence earlier.

Evening Series – 18:00, draw, 18:30 lines in, 21:00 out

If you intend to fish, please contact Craig Whelan on 07525 966 187, or the club via Facebook, 24 hours before the match is due to start.

2018 Evening Series – Match 5

Tuesday 17th July 2018

For our fifth and final match of the 2018-2019 Evening Series was held at Crown Meadows, given the performance of last week and the opportunity to finish up slightly earlier to the pub to chat over the Series. Still no rain to be had, so levels low, with clear water and very little pace, we held the match in cooler, overcast conditions.

We’d use the same pegs as last week (from the sty past ‘The Poplars’ downstream), with pegs 3 and 4 being pegged this week, however 4 was not drawn, 6 anglers fished this week.

Either end of the drawn pegs seeing very different bags of fish, not huge weights and certainly not anything like last week, Roach were to be found near the sty end, and to the far end (downstream) the Perch were hiding with Dace to be found in all pegs. The Chub didn’t really make an appearance this week as they did toward the end of the session like last week – and this is a great example of the variety of river fishing!

The results were quite a surprise, to see three anglers all catch 2lb 12oz which saw very little movement on the final tables for the Series. Waggler was of favour again, with Terry Greenslade opting to use the bomb to get to the very depths of what water there was.

2018 Evening Series – Match 4

Tuesday 10th July 2018

For our fourth match in the 2018-2019 Evening Series we changed venue to Crown Meadows, after a visit over the prior weekend to ensure suitability and confirm we had enough pegs to fish the, decision was made (thank you for being patient with our decision making). We had 6 anglers arrive to fish this wonderful venue.

Pegs were placed from the sty past ‘The Poplars’ downstream, a variety of swims with high and low bank features, reed beds and coverage from trees on the far bank in places. Making the effort to get to this stretch of river is worth it for the spectacle of it alone – not to mention when pegging out shoals of fish could be seen in most of the pegs, this was going to be a good evening of fishing – IF we could get the fishing feeding.

Slightly cloudy with a breeze, still experiencing warmer temperatures and no rain – this could be tough going. However, a few of our anglers found that the fish were biting at the first cast and those lucky enough to keep the fish in their pegs and keep them biting had a busy evening.

A mixed bag of Roach, Perch and Chub were the staple for the catches during the evening. Waggler with maggot or worm proving successful with feeding of hemp and/or maggot keeping the fish rooted to the peg. Worm was definitely working for those looking to attract Perch in the depths – Crown Meadows is certainly holding deeper water than Nutford.

2018 Evening Series – Match 3

Tuesday 3rd July 2018

A continued dry spell wasn’t going to make the fishing any easier this evening, and coupled with a clash with an England international football match…turn out and the fishing was going to be hard going. 6 anglers attended the third match of our Evening Series, we decided to run the match across the middle pegs in the first field given the abundance of weed in the second field swims (despite maintenance prior to opening the coarse season). The weather was slightly cloudy but warm and still no rain meant water levels were lower still this week.

Variation on catches between pegs was massive as seen by the tabled results below. Terry finally found his form and put 2lb of fish in the net, a brilliant result given increasingly difficulty conditions. Tony and David proving also the fish were to be found, with a couple of reasonable Perch and Roach to be found. Running line proving of favour, with waggler and single white or double red maggot attracting the fish where they were to be found.

We’re quite unsure what happened between Stewart, Liam and Craig this week, questions were asked if hooks were attached to line!

2018 Evening Series – Match 2

Tuesday 26th June 2018

We saw 7 anglers return for round 2 of our Evening Series, the continued warm weather certainly causing some concern of being able to catch at all by those who turned up. Very little visible flow, a reducing river level and an expectation that the fish just wouldn’t be feeding at all certainly was the talk before the draw.

Well the theory was proven right – it was a tough night for all. Having pegged out of the top half of the 1st field from Peg 13 (as marked) upwards, there was plenty of variation between pegs to mix thing up a little. The Perch were to be found if you came equipped with worm and some patience. Various sizes were to be had with Liam and Stewart both catching reasonably sized specimens during the 3 hours of fishing, reasonable being circa 1lb.

The far bank was providing catches for all who ventured there, with the risk of getting caught up in either the overhang if your cast wasn’t accurate or snagging on some of the reeds and lilies on the return to recast. Small Dace, Roach and Perch to be picked off if you could get through the Minnows!
